URBAN SERPENT VOLUME 6

Here's a compilation i put together circa 2002. It's a really great time capsule of the period here in Dunedin, New Zealand. Some (most) of these bands no longer exist anymore. Personal Highlights for me are the tracks by The Fraudulents, The Snares & Polyamorous Love Cult. There's some real doozies on there...notably Gross's 'Day's Of Our Lives' & Witcyst's 'New French Document'.

This was originally released as a 12" acetate record - courtesy of King Records (NZ).Only 100 were ever made (of which i still have around 15 stowed away) If you like the sound of this comp & feel like purchasing the real deal ($15 nz + postage) feel free to get hold of me through a comment on this blog.

WOLFSKULL LIVE

Wolfskull are -
ISO12 - Korg & Vox
Rocko Mandroid - Bass & Autoharp
CJA the Pirate - Guitar
Duane Zarakov - Drums

I Remember the night well. Wolfskull got drafted onto the bill with another 'noise' band, Khomet, & some hideous noodly outfit from Wellington. Wolfskull played a scorching doom set. ISO12 was like a cross between Alan Vega & James Brown, i totally melted my brain before the show even started. I remember thinking the bass sounded particularly bovine that night. The Pirate laid down some of the most acerbic riffage ever to emit from a stringed instrument. Zarakov was on fire - playing a solid half hour skifflorama prog anthem to the mush on top.

FIFTY FOOT HOSE - CAULDRON

Holy Space face melt!!! Here's Mandroid's Album Of The Week

Photobucket

Fifty Foot Hose is a psychedelic rock band that formed in San Francisco in the late 1960s. Like a few other acts of the time (most notably the United States Of America), they were consciously trying to fuse the contemporary sounds of rock with electronic instruments and avant-garde compositional ideas.

The original group comprised three core members: founder and bassist Louis "Cork" Marcheschi, guitarist David Blossom, and his wife, vocalist Nancy Blossom, augmented by Kim Kimsey (drums) and Larry Evans (guitar).

David and Nancy Blossom brought both psychedelic and jazz influences to the band. Together, the trio recorded a demo which led to a deal with Limelight, a subsidiary of Mercury Records.

They released one album, "Cauldron", in December 1967. It contained eleven songs, including "Fantasy", "Red the Sign Post" and "God Bless the Child", a Billie Holiday cover. Although an erratic work, it was intriguing for its mix of jazzy psychedelic rock tunes with fierce and primitive electronic sound effects. "I don't know if they are immature or premature", said critic Ralph J. Gleason.

For fans of Bruce Haack, Music Machine, The U.S.A/Field Hippies type primitivo synth action this is a must have.

THE NOISE OF ROCKO MANDROID

Mandroid recorded these tracks circa 2000; oozing with the spirit of impending y2k, emanating the feral environs he found himself in at the time. This is the sound of mandroid cutting his teeth on a 4-track. This batch of recordings was independantly released under the moniker of 'elixir in flux' - flame brain skiffle in 2000AD. I only ever put out 20 CD-r's of the album. So here it is for you now - free in all it's streaming glory. Stoke up the bong motherfuckers.
